Testing Your Internet Speeds at Home

Many homeowners feel they are not receiving the internet speeds they are paying for. Before calling your internet provider, there is a simple way to test whether the issue is with your internet service or your WiFi network.

The best way to test your internet speed is by connecting directly to your modem or ONT using an Ethernet cable.

How to Test Your Internet Speed

  1. Locate your cable modem, ONT (Optical Network Terminal), or ISP-provided equipment.

  2. Find the Ethernet port on the back of the device.

  3. Plug your laptop directly into the Ethernet port using an Ethernet cable.

  4. Open your web browser and go to:https://www.speedtest.net

  5. Select the closest server to your location for the most accurate results.

Running the test this way removes WiFi from the equation and provides the most accurate measurement of your internet connection.

Avoid Using ISP Speed Test Tools

It is important not to rely solely on the speed test tools provided by your internet service provider. Some providers host their own testing servers, which may produce results that do not reflect real-world performance.

Using a third-party tool like Speedtest.net provides a more neutral test.

Why WiFi Speed Tests Can Be Misleading

Running a speed test over WiFi is often not accurate. Wireless performance can be affected by many factors, including:

  • Distance from the router

  • Walls and construction materials

  • Interference from other wireless devices

  • Older routers or outdated firmware

Because of these variables, testing over WiFi may show slower speeds even when your internet connection is working properly.

Other Things to Check

Before assuming there is an issue with your internet service, try the following:

  • Restart or unplug your modem and router for about 30 seconds.

  • Make sure your router firmware is up to date.

  • Ensure your devices (laptops, phones, tablets) are updated as well.

Still Not Getting the Speeds You Expect?

If your wired speed test results are still much lower than the speeds you are paying for, it may be time to contact your internet service provider for further troubleshooting.
