How to Use Your Own Router with Ripple Fiber

Many homeowners are excited when fiber internet becomes available in their neighborhood. Fiber connections offer faster speeds, lower latency, and more reliable performance than traditional cable internet. However, after installation, some customers discover that their existing wireless system or mesh network no longer works the way it did before.

Recently, I assisted a homeowner who had fiber installed by Ripple. During the installation, the technician provided a Nokia Beacon wireless system. While this device works well for many households, the homeowner already had a Linksys wireless router and preferred to continue using their existing network setup.

The challenge was that the fiber connection required PPPoE authentication, which meant the router needed a specific username and password from the ISP.

What is PPPoE?

PPPoE stands for Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet. Some internet providers use PPPoE to authenticate your router before granting internet access. Instead of automatically receiving an IP address, the router must log in using credentials provided by the ISP.

These credentials are typically entered into the router’s WAN settings.

Why the Nokia Beacon Sometimes Causes Confusion

Many fiber providers supply a router or mesh system like the Nokia Beacon as part of the installation. By default, these devices operate in router mode, meaning they handle:

  • Network Address Translation (NAT)

  • DHCP for local devices

  • Wireless connectivity

If you connect another router behind this device without changing the configuration, you can end up with double NAT, which can cause problems with gaming, VPNs, or port forwarding.

The Two Best Solutions

There are two common ways to resolve this situation.

Option 1: Use Your Own Router with PPPoE (Recommended)

In this setup, your router connects directly to the fiber ONT (Optical Network Terminal) and handles the PPPoE login.

Network layout:

Fiber → ONT → Your Router → WiFi / Devices

This is often the cleanest and simplest setup if the ISP allows it. In this case, we contacted the provider, obtained the PPPoE credentials, and entered them into the Linksys router. The customer's network was back online within minutes.

Option 2: Put the ISP Router in Bridge Mode

Another option is to keep the ISP’s router but place it into bridge mode.

Bridge mode disables the routing functions of the device so your personal router can manage the network instead.

Network layout:

Fiber → ONT → ISP Router (Bridge Mode) → Your Router → Devices

Fiber vs Cable Internet

Many customers also ask whether fiber is really better than cable. In most cases, fiber offers several advantages:

  • Faster upload speeds

  • Lower latency

  • More reliable performance

  • Less congestion during peak hours

Because fiber uses light instead of electrical signals, it is typically more stable over long distances.

Need Help with Fiber Internet Setup?

If you recently had fiber internet installed and your WiFi system or router is not working the way you expect, professional configuration can make a big difference. Whether it’s PPPoE setup, mesh network configuration, or optimizing WiFi coverage, the right network setup ensures you get the full performance of your fiber connection.
